Bookworm Central’s BookConnect Program

A big thank you to PWCS and Glynis Taylor, Supervisor of School-Age Child Care Programs, for partnering with us to bring Bookworm Central’s BookConnect program to the AlphaBest summer camp this year! BookConnect: Building Community One Book at a Time is a literacy program designed to support social-emotional growth through curated books, reflective conversations, and mindful activities. The customized module adopted — “Celebrating Each Other” — invites students to explore empathy, healthy peer relationships, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. Each classroom received a set of 10 carefully curated books, and every camper will be given a personal activity handbook to help them connect with the stories — both at camp and at home. Educator guides are offered for each title, providing staff with structured tools to lead meaningful, inclusive discussions that build confidence, connection, and compassion. To support implementation, trainer Karen Bentall led a 90-minute professional development session focused on the art of reading aloud and encouraging child-centered dialogue. Staff were fully engaged — asking insightful questions and showing real enthusiasm for creating joyful, story-rich experiences for campers. We can’t wait to see the joy, reflection, and conversation this partnership will spark — in classrooms, at home, and in the school community.
